PROJECTS

The Peterson’s Project

Completed in September 2024, this project brought back into use the Grade II listed Peterson’s Smokehouse along with an additional building on Wharncliffe Road.

Building 89 is now returned to its original use as offices on the upper two floors, with retail space on the ground floor. The project was brought forward by GGIFT in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council and landowners Associated British Ports, with development funding from the Architectural Heritage Fund, National Lottery Heritage Fund, and Associated British Ports.

In June 2020 we were successful in our Round 2 bid for £647,400 to the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver the project, through their Heritage Enterprise scheme, with an additional £300,000 provided by the Architectural Heritage Fund through their Transforming Places Through Heritage grants programme. Public investment in the project overall amounts to £1.4 million.

The buildings are available to be rented out on a commercial basis.

The Kasbah website

In June 2020 GGIFT was successful in securing a £10,000 grant from the Digital Confidence Fund, administered by NLHF, to develop a website that showcases and brings together all the diverse elements within this exciting new Conservation Area.

We worked closely with members of the Kasbah Steering Group, made up of representatives from GGIFT, North East Lincolnshire Council, Associated British Ports and Historic England to create a one-stop digital destination for information about the heritage, current tenants and businesses, and the future of the Kasbah. The website went live on 20, July 2021.

Grimsby Ice Factory: Updated Condition Report

In November 2018 GGIFT was awarded £40,000 by the Coastal Revival Fund for an updated condition report on the building.

Buttress Architects (Manchester) carried out the survey and the report was completed by September 2019. Estimates for repairs ranged from £5 million (urgent works) to £11.5 million. Subseqently, Historic England awarded North East Lincolnshire Council a further £30,000 (to be brought up to a total of £40,000 by GGIFT and Associated British Ports) for a detailed survey of the roof structures.

Grimsby Ice Factory: Options Appraisal

In 2013, with the help and support of the Prince’s Regeneration Trust, GGIFT completed an options appraisal on the Grimsby Ice Factory.

The appraisal was carried out by Purcell, Miller, Tritton (York), with Bell Business Development, and was funded by the Architectural Heritage Fund, The Pilgrim Trust, North East Lincolnshire Council, and community fundraising. The result was a mixed-use proposal, incorporating an art gallery, cinema, brewery, offices and small retail. GGIFT made an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for funding to develop the £12 million scheme. Unfortunately the bid was unsuccessful and the project did not progress beyond the options appraisal stage.

Project Ice Interviews

In January 2013 the Great Grimsby Ice Factory Trust (GGIFT) was awarded £6,400 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake a digital archive project.

The aim of the project was to seek out and record the memories of past employees of the Grimsby Ice Factory and associated trades on the docks. GGIFT trustees and others volunteered over a period more than a year to meet with and video the interviewees, the results of which can be viewed by following the link below.
